(English Abstract)
Recently, studies are being actively conducted on location-based services (LBS) that use smartphones with built-in GPS function. In the conventional studies, techniques have been proposed in which location information data is sent from a mobile device to a server after a certain time interval or distance traversed has exceeded. However, this technique leads to network overload because it does not take into account speed changes of the moving object appropriately thereby collecting and sending unnecessary duplicate data. In this paper, we propose a technique that saves power of a mobile device by using the sensors installed in the smartphones. The proposed technique minimizes this power wastage by preventing the collection of unnecessary location data. Consequently, the performance evaluation of our proposed technique showed energy savings of about 86% while collecting location information data of city buses as compared with the conventional technique.
